Procedures for your change of address for the DMV will very state by state. However, there are some general guidelines that you can make sure to check off. To start, all drivers should have their current address updated on their drivers license. To update your address, simply log into the online system for your state and provide the following information:
In most states, you can also update your drivers license address through the mail if you would prefer not to update online. This can be a very convenient option for seniors, those in the military who are stationed overseas as well as those who just may not have access to a computer. In order to send out the form by mail, you will have to print the DMV address change form and send it out with any additional necessary fees to the address provided by your state. Make sure that you also send through proof of your identity by sending a copy of the front and back of your drivers license along with your application form.
If you would also like your address to show on your license, you may need to request a new drivers license as well. Some states will only update your office to your DMV records unless you order a new license.
Be prepared to provide the DMV with your full name, license number, your old address, your new address and any payment information that is needed for any changing fees.
Some states may require that you come into your local DMV in person in order to update your information. If you decide to stop into the DMV to update your address, you will need to provide proof of identity, proof of residency, proof of social security number and payment to cover the fees of changing your address.
Keep in mind that changing your address will not change the expiration date of your license and you will still need to renew your license by your previous expiration date.
